Five New Queens Lawmakers Endorse Andrew Cuomo for NYC Mayor
Additional Wave of Support Follows Pivotal Endorsement of Queens Democratic County Chair Rep. Gregory W. Meeks
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, candidate for Mayor of New York City, today proudly received the endorsement of the five Queens legislators: New York State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, New York State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr., Assembly Member David Weprin, Assembly Member Edward Braunstein, and Council Member Lynn Schulman.
The Queens legislators formally endorsed Governor Cuomo in his mayoral bid, coming off the heels of the Democratic Organization of Queens County and Chairman Rep. Gregory W. Meeks, who announced the party’s support on Sunday evening in Forest Hills. The slate of legislators touted Governor Cuomo’s record on affordability, tackling quality of life issues like public safety, helping communities recover from Hurricane Sandy, and his record on standing up to President Trump.
“I was proud to work with Andrew Cuomo during his time as Governor to engage marriage equality, codify Roe v. Wade into law, and pass the Dream Act,” New York State Senator Stavisky said. “I will support Andrew Cuomo when I vote for Mayor because New Yorkers can count on him to tackle crime, support our public schools, and create affordable housing.”
“Whether you believe the city is in a crisis or at the crossroads of one, we need someone with experience to turn this city around. For me, that person is Andrew Cuomo and that is why I’m supporting him for Mayor. Having worked with him on the state level, I know he understands government at all levels” New York State Senator Addabbo said. “He navigated us through the COVID pandemic and locally helped us in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, and has dealt with President Trump during his first term. It is that kind of experience that we need right now to witness better days ahead for our city.”
“Andrew Cuomo is the only candidate in this race with a proven record of delivering results. His record isn’t just promises. It is progress that we have seen and felt. He is an accomplished leader who can navigate New York through these turbulent times,” Assembly Member Weprin said. “Queens stands with him and I am proud to endorse Andrew Cuomo for Mayor of New York City.”
“Andrew Cuomo is the proven leader we need right now to get New York City back on the right track. As Mayor he will focus on the issues important to the people I represent in Northeast Queens,” Assembly Member Braunstein said. “Andrew Cuomo will fight to improve public safety, enhance our quality of life, and address the affordability challenges confronting our city.”
“I am proud to represent the diverse communities of Queens Council District 29 and have heard from many throughout the district that they want Andrew Cuomo, a steadfast and experienced hand, to lead the city through these difficult times,” Council Member Schulman said. “Andrew Cuomo has a proven track record of achievement, from bringing older adult housing to Queens as HUD Secretary to getting the landmark LGBTQ+ equal rights bill over the finish line as Governor. Having grown up around my district, Andrew Cuomo also understands the unique challenges my constituents face, and will fight to ensure they get the services they need, as well as protect them and all New Yorkers against the ravages of the Trump Administration. I look forward to working with Andrew Cuomo as the next Mayor of New York City.”
This announcement comes on the heels of other key endorsements from borough officials that include Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer Amato, Assembly Member Vivian Cook, Assembly Member Sam Berger, District Leader 24A Martha Taylor, District Leader 23B James McGoorty, District Leader 23B Jeanette Garamond, District Leader 23A Frank Gulluscio, District Leader 36B Kimberly Mullarkey, and District Leader 36B Theodore Kasapis.
Cuomo is a proud ‘Queens Boy’ who has never forgotten his roots. Born and raised in the borough, he attended Archbishop Molloy High School and has a deep understanding and appreciation for the needs and concerns of the outer borough communities.
As Governor, he has a proud record of delivering for Queens that includes revitalizing and rebuilding Queens’ infrastructure and expanding public transit. Cuomo championed the $8 billion renovation and modernization of LaGuardia Airport, one of the busiest airports in the country – turning it around from ‘worst to first’ – and spearheaded the redevelopment of JFK Airport with a focus on creating a world-class travel hub in our backyard. He also oversaw significant infrastructure investments across Queens, including the development of the LIRR East Side Access project, rebuilding the Second Avenue Subway, and launched several projects to revitalize the waterfront in Long Island City, transforming it into a vibrant residential, business, and cultural hub.
Throughout his career in public service, Governor Cuomo has been a champion for working New Yorkers. He raised wages for millions, protected the right to organize when the Supreme Court tried to break the back of the labor movement, increased access to healthcare, enacted the nation's strongest paid family leave program and expanded apprenticeships, vocational training, and workforce development programs. He also advanced the most substantial infrastructure program in a generation, including the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall and the new Kosciuszko Bridge and the new JFK and LaGuardia Airports – all major projects built with union labor with nation-leading utilization rates of minority and women-owned businesses (MWBEs).
