Governor Cuomo Receives Endorsement of Former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, a candidate for Mayor of New York City, today received the endorsement of former Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr.
In making his endorsement, Borough President Diaz cited Governor Cuomo’s record of fighting for the Bronx, specifically his work to tear down the Sheridan Expressway and return access to the waterfront to Bronx residents, improvements at the Hunt’s Point Market and advancing the construction of four new Metro North stations. He also commended Cuomo's leadership in building new and affordable housing projects, guiding New York City’s ongoing recovery and his commitment to Puerto Rico as it faced a series of natural disasters during his governorship.
“New York City is at a pivotal moment, one that requires a steady hand and strong leadership to deal with the issues we face at home in our streets and the federal government’s dramatic turn away from our values,” Ruben Diaz Jr. said. “I am proud to support Governor Cuomo to be our next mayor, and I know he will be the fighter we need to deliver effective solutions on crime, disorder, housing, affordability, education and so many other issues. During my time as Bronx Borough President, then- Governor Cuomo and I worked hand-in-hand to deliver massive investment on the projects that matter, partnering to bring billions of dollars to the borough and executing on projects that had long been dreamed of. I have seen firsthand how effective a leader he can be, and I know that Governor Cuomo can deliver for us as our next mayor. I encourage all Democrats to support him in the June primary and send him to fight for us in City Hall.”
Ruben Diaz Jr. first entered public office as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1997 and then served as the Bronx Borough President from 2009 to 2021. As borough president, he led an unprecedented revival of the Bronx in areas of economic development, job creation, health, and housing.
Throughout his career in public service, Cuomo has been a champion for working New Yorkers. He raised wages for millions of workers, passed the strongest gun violence prevention and paid family leave laws in the nation, advanced the most substantial infrastructure program in a generation, including the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall, the new Kosciuszko Bridge and the new JFK and LaGuardia airports and codified Roe vs. Wade in state law years before the Supreme Court overturned it, all while cutting taxes and reining in spending.
The former Borough President joins U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, the Staten Island Democratic Party, Assembly Member Charles Fall, Assembly Member Eddie Gibbs, Assembly Member Yudelka Tapia, Council Member Kamillah Hanks, Council Member Farah Louis, the Aldo Democratic Club, New York City and Vicinity District Council of Carpenters, District Council 9 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, former Brooklyn Democratic party Chairman Frank Seddio, Brooklyn Democratic party Vice Chair Henry Butler, 25 District Leaders across the city, former national director of the Anti-Defamation League Abe Foxman, the Village Reform Democratic Club, and the Italian American Leadership Council in endorsing Governor Cuomo for Mayor of New York City.
