New York State Iron Workers Endorse Andrew Cuomo for New York City Mayor
15,000 Skilled Workers Across the State Join Campaign to Save Our City
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, candidate for Mayor of New York City, today announced the New York State Iron Workers District Council has proudly endorsed his candidacy as its first ranked choice. In citing its reason to endorse Governor Cuomo, the union touted his record of building iconic infrastructure projects like the Mario Cuomo Bridge and LaGuardia Airport while ensuring good wages and opportunities for its members.
"Andrew Cuomo has demonstrated an unmatched commitment to building New York's infrastructure with union labor,” said President Pete Myers. “From the Mario Cuomo Bridge to LaGuardia's transformation, he has consistently prioritized projects that create good union jobs while delivering world-class infrastructure. New York's Iron Workers know that as Mayor, Andrew will bring that same vision and dedication to the five boroughs, ensuring that our skilled tradespeople build the next chapter of New York City's future.”
"I am grateful to receive the endorsement of the Iron Workers, who serve as the backbone of so many critical projects across this city,” said Governor Cuomo. “Together, we didn’t just rebuild LaGuardia Airport, Moynihan Train Hall, or the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge — we also helped build the middle class. If we’re going to solve New York City’s housing and affordability crisis, then the people risking their lives to build our city must earn enough to call the five boroughs home. That’s why, if we’re going to turn this city around, organized labor must have a seat at the table, and good union jobs must be part of the solution. It’s what I did as Governor, and what I will do again as Mayor.”
The endorsement comes one day after the pivotal backing of 32BJ SEIU and HTC. The Iron Workers also join the Uniformed EMTs, Paramedics & Fire Inspectors Local 2507, the New York City Deputy Sheriffs’ Benevolent Association, New York City Coalition of the International Union of the Operating Engineers, The Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2, Teamsters Local 237, Local 3 IBEW, New York City and Vicinity District Council of Carpenters, and District Council 9 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades in endorsing Andrew Cuomo for Mayor.
Throughout his career in public service, Governor Cuomo has been a champion for working New Yorkers. He raised wages for millions, protected the right to organize when the Supreme Court tried to break the back of the labor movement, increased access to healthcare, enacted the nation's strongest paid family leave program and expanded apprenticeships, vocational training, and workforce development programs. He also advanced the most substantial infrastructure program in a generation, including the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall and the new Kosciuszko Bridge and the new JFK and LaGuardia Airports – all major projects built with union labor.
The union joins the Democratic Organization of Queens County and Chairman Rep. Gregory W. Meeks, U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, Brooklyn Democratic Chair and Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, the Staten Island Democratic Party, former New York State Comptroller Carl McCall, former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., New York State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, New York State Senator Joseph P.
